FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

If you find yourselves stuck in the same arguments, feeling distant, struggling to communicate, or facing trust issues, couples therapy can help you understand what’s going wrong and guide you toward rebuilding a stronger connection.

Choosing the right couples therapist means finding someone with specialized training, experience in evidence-based approaches, and a style that makes both partners feel safe, heard, and respected throughout the process.

Our sessions can be either depending on the therapist. It is best to check with the therapist of your choice, or reach out to us and ask – we’re happy to help!

Couples therapy typically involves regular sessions where you and your partner talk openly with a trained therapist who guides conversations, teaches communication skills, and helps you work through challenges together in a supportive, judgment-free space.

You’ll start to notice improvements in how you communicate, handle conflicts, and connect emotionally—plus, your therapist will help track your progress and adjust the approach to ensure therapy is meeting your relationship goals.

It’s natural to worry about that. Couples therapy can sometimes feel challenging as it brings up difficult feelings, but a skilled therapist creates a safe space to work through these issues constructively—when done well, therapy helps you grow stronger, not worse.

That’s a common situation. You can start by expressing your feelings honestly and inviting your partner to try therapy without pressure—sometimes just one person’s willingness to seek help can open the door for positive change over time.

If it remains that they do not wish to begin couples therapy, we suggest beginning individual therapy with one of our other expert therapists to begin experiencing positive changes in at least your life, while you wait. Sometimes your individual changes is exactly what your partner needs to see in order to begin the process as well.

We get that wanting your partner on board feels important! While we can’t talk directly to them, we can help you craft a thoughtful message or conversation starter that shows why couples therapy matters to you.

Most likely. It’s important to check with your insurance carrier to determine if they cover “Registered Clinical Counselling,” “Clinical Counselling,” “Counselling,” “Mental Health Counselling,” “Psychotherapy,” “Psychological Services.”

We have conveniently included most insurance carriers where our services are accepted (although others who have not been included may still provide reimbursement).

If you determine your carrier will accept our services in full or in part, you are required to pay in full for our services, and then seek reimbursement from your insurance carrier.

It’s important to learn which designation your insurance carrier covers prior to your consultation and then discuss this matter prior to commencing services.

It’s confusing isn’t it? Let’s bring some clarity here.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD’s) with a focus on mental health. They can formally diagnose and prescribe medications.

Psychologists are “doctors of psychology” but are not medical doctors. They have a PhD. They are allowed to diagnose mental health conditions, conduct psychological assessments, but cannot prescribe medications.

Psychotherapists and Clinical Counsellors are interchangeable designations where each province will have certain protected rights to use a particular designation. For example, in British Columbia, we are called either Registered Clinical Counsellors or Certified Clinical Counsellors; in Ontario the term used is Registered Psychotherapist. Counsellors/Psychotherapists (whichever term is used) generally have a MA level degree, are able to conduct psychological /counselling services but are not able to formally diagnose, assess, or prescribe medication.

Social Workers are able to conduct counselling sessions and are governed by the College of Social Workers. They may also belong to other professional associations and conduct therapy/counselling/psychotherapy within those guidelines.

Social workers most often have a MA level degree, and like Clinical Counsellors/Psychotherapists, cannot formally diagnose, assess, or prescribe medication.

Hope that helps!
